Turning Minecraft, Halo, and Microsoft Flight Simulator into a metaverse with a 3D world is undoubtedly an ambitious project.
Satya Nadella (CEO of Microsoft) stated that they plan a 3D metaverse application with their Xbox and games.
Microsoft Plans Metaverse App In 3D For Xbox
Microsoft recently announced the Microsoft Teams metaverse for meetings and video calling, but they also have plans for the gaming and entertainment sector. Speaking to Bloomberg TV, Satya Nadella said he would “really” focus on gaming for the Xbox metaverse.
“You can expect us to do a lot in the gaming sector,” said Nadella. “If you think of Halo as a game, then it’s a metaverse. Minecraft is a metaverse, and so is Microsoft Flight Simulator. In some ways, today, the metaverse is still 2D. The question is ‘can you now bring it into a fully 3D world?’ and we plan to do so.”
“Minecraft Is The Metaverse, and Halo Is The Metaverse”
The Verge reports that Microsoft initially demonstrated the potential of Minecraft with augmented reality (AR) with the release of HoloLens. This special version of Minecraft for HoloLens appears to have been in the works six years ago, but so far, what has been released is Minecraft Earth, the AR mobile game which they have now closed.
Turning Minecraft, Halo, and Microsoft Flight Simulator into a metaverse with a 3D world is undoubtedly an ambitious project. If this world allows players to explore it with a VR or AR headset, we can imagine its potential in the future.
Nadella hasn’t committed to exactly when we’ll see Microsoft’s push into the 3D metaverse world for gaming more broadly. Maybe we’ll see in a little while. Perhaps this plan will take some more time. We’ll wait for Microsoft’s commitment later.
