In October this year, the Research Sensor Tower portal reported that Japan Mobile Game led the per capita spending on video games for smartphones in the first three quarters of 2021. Japan will lead the per capita spending on video games for smartphones in 2020, and the trend continues.

The data reveal the ten markets with the highest gross revenues in the first three quarters of 2021 (excluding China). Japan’s average per capita spending on video games for smartphones and non-video game applications outpaced all others by around USD149 (IDR2, 1 million), which is an 18 percent year-over-year increase.

The report also shows that this is five percentage points lower than the 23 percent growth Japan saw between the same period in 2019 and 2020. Potentially suggests that user behavior is normalizing following the increased spending on apps driven by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Japan, South Korea, the United States, Australia, Canada, United Kingdom, Germany, France, Thailand, and Russia are the ten highest revenue markets for mobile apps, according to App Store. Google Play spend combined from Q1 to Q3. 2021. (As in the previous analysis, China was omitted to directly compare, as the Google Play platform is not available there).

Although Japan recorded the highest average per capita spending from Q1 to Q3 2021, US app stores generated the most increased overall spending among the markets studied.
